Clara Abel

Born in 1995, cellist CLARA ABEL began her musical studies at the age of four, under the instruction of Liz Efroymson. Her principal teachers have since included William Grubb and Joel Krosnick.

As the winner of numerous concerto competitions, Ms. Abel has soloed with the Carmel Symphony, the Lafayette Symphony, the New World Youth Symphony, the Marion Philharmonic, and the Fishers Chamber Orchestra. She has appeared on NPR’s From the Top, as well as on Indianapolis Public Radio for a live broadcast of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition finals.

Ms. Abel has toured nationally and internationally as a member of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the USA. In 2013, she was named principal cellist of the NYO, and performed at the Kennedy Center, Moscow Conservatory, the Mariinsky II Theatre, and the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall with soloist Joshua Bell, under the baton of Maestro Valery Gergiev. She rejoined the orchestra in 2014 on an eight-city tour of the US with violinist Gil Shaham and conductor David Robertson, performing in Carnegie Hall and Disney Hall, among others. She has also played under Alan Gilbert, Itzhak Perlman, Tadaaki Otaka, Jeffrey Milarsky, and Joshua Weilerstein, among others.

Ms. Abel has a passion for chamber music which began at a very young age playing quartets with her family. She continues to perform with the Abel String Quartet and the New York based Cosmopolitan Chamber Players, in addition to her many chamber music engagements at Juilliard. She has coached with Michael Tree, Sam Rhodes, Earl Carlyss, Jennifer Combs, Amy Barston, Csaba Erdelyi, Laurie Carney, John Sharp, Robert Chen, and the East Coast Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to cello, Ms. Abel plays the piano and sings. She is a recorded vocalist for Hal Leonard Co. and Plank Road Publishing, and has toured the United States and the United Kingdom extensively with St. Paul’s Choir, soloing in Westminster Abbey, York Minster Cathedral, and the National Cathedral, among others. She is currently a first-year student at Juilliard, studying with Joel Krosnick. She is the recipient of the Naumberg Scholarship and the National Merit Scholarship.
