In Memoriam: José Alejandro Guzmán

Alex Guzman

In loving memory of our Maestro.

José Alejandro Guzmán became the CSO’s Music Director in 2010 following numerous appearances as a guest conductor with the orchestra. In a career spanning over 40 years, Maestro Guzmán garnered wide acclaim conducting the symphonic, operatic and choral repertoire with many New York-based orchestras, opera companies and choruses.

He stepped down following 26 years as Music Director of the Regina Opera to devote more time to his first love, the symphonic repertoire. In addition to the CSO, he served as Music Director of the Staten Island Philharmonic and was formerly the Music Director of the Bronx Symphony Orchestra (15 years) and the Rockaway-5 Towns Symphony Orchestra (6 years).

In addition, Maestro Guzmán served frequently as a guest conductor, having appeared with the Bronx Arts Ensemble, the Bel Canto Opera, the Riverside Symphony, and the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra, to name just a few. Highlights of Maestro Guzmán’s current season include leading the Massapequa Philharmonic in the music of Mendelssohn, Glazunov and Mahler last October and, in April 2016, a concert with the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble featuring music of Beethoven, Bruch, and Schumann.
